Ezri’s Scales, chapter two

Read chapter one first, here.

Chapter Two

“Like, like, like, and quadruple like,” Dom said. She made exaggerated motions while tapping her phone. Dom was lying on the couch in front of our television. That thing needed to be changed, since it likely hadn’t been cleaned for months, and the television was so old it had a long antennae sitting out from its back. It was so old it might as well be a piece of decoration. When we wanted to watch shows, Dom and I simply used our laptops.

I stirred my cup of coffee. A café latte with an extra dose of sugar. I used last month’s paycheck to splurge on a coffee machine. Best decision ever. “What are you liking so hard about?”

Dom, full name Dominique, waggled her eyebrows. She was my roommate in our dingy little apartment. A caramel-skinned goddess with a big poof of hair she rocked and christened Angela.

Her skin would be glowing if the lights were on. The landlord should have come down to fix the lights in the living room three months ago, but it still wasn’t working. Dom and I didn’t have it in us to fork out the money for a new light-bulb. It was the landlord’s job, after all.

My roommate sat up and flipped her phone so it faced me. I had to squint to get a better view of her screen. “Um… it’s a dude.”

“Not just any.”

I slugged back a big gulp of my coffee. The caffeine and sugar zinged through me. Ah, nothing better than a fresh dose of addictive substances to knock back the cravings. “The picture’s probably Photoshopped till kingdom come,” I said. I sat across from Dom and kicked my legs up onto the coffee table, knocking aside some magazines. We really needed to clean this place. Sure, I could use Pop’s money to hire some cleaners, but I hated taking much from him. The only reason why I was stuck by his side was because he had this ‘family needs to be close’ policy—if I tried to run, he’d hunt me down and drag me back. Read More »

Ezri’s Scales, chapter one

Hello everyone, Clara Hartley and I (ido) decided to write something together, just for fun. This is Chapter one, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did when we wrote it!.

CHAPTER ONE

I watched Kev as he placed the baby mice into the refrigerator. They were still alive, blind and unable to wink open their eyes. He slammed the door shut with his foot.

“Still can’t get over it when you do it like that,” I said. Here in Scale Pet Co. we didn’t do things the humane way. If I had control over things, I’d make sure the mice had an easier death. I tried implementing a death-by-CO2 policy but my pops refused to approve my suggestion.

One day I’d open a pet shop by myself, but for now, I had to put up with the horrible practices of Dalmazio Giachetti, leader of the criminal west side of New York and also, my father.

“Boss says he doesn’t want to waste money on stinkin’ mice.” Kev picked his pencil out from behind his ear and licked the tip of it before scribbling on the clipboard to note inventory. He had a strange habit of christening his pencils with his tongue before using them, and that was exactly why I never dared use any of his stationery. That might have been his master plan.

He fiddled with the top of his mohawk and lifted a cursory gaze toward me. “You shouldn’t be feeling soft for mice. They’re rats.”

“Actually, they’re two very different species.” I was handling the inventory myself, looking through how much dog food we had left. “You should know that, considering you work in a pet shop.”

“Eh.” Kev licked the piercing at the bottom of his tongue. He was tatted head to toe. “Ah, missed one.” He reached for another bag of squirming mice, their skins red and translucent because they never had the chance to grow furs, and tossed them into the fridge like he would a bag of meat. “You’re the only one who takes this shop seriously. You know your pops just wants it as a front.”

Ding. Someone was ringing the bell at the cashier.

I tipped a brow at Kev. “I happen to like animals.”

 “The scaly kinds,” Kev replied.

“They have cute, beady eyes.”

PETTING THEM: AN ANTHOLOGY OF CLAW-VER TAILS

Petting Them: An Anthology of Claw-ver Tails by [James, Tate, Stunich, C.M., June, Coralee, Royce, Rebecca, Bailey, G., Proserpina, Ripley, Jones, Stacy, Randall, Cecilia, Smoke, Lucy, Faulks, Kim]Many of our readers here might know CM Stunich (or you may have read her as Violet Blaze). She writes tons of amazing books that we have featured here.

She is an amazing human being who spends an incredible amount of time rescuing cats and dogs from horrendous circumstances and nursing them back to health in her home. She runs a nonprofit to do this.

CM Stunich has made several trips to Texas (from Oregon) to rescue kittens from a kill shelter which still uses a gas chamber on their animals! She drove, 30 something hours each way, then brought them all back to her home in Oregon where she has footed tens of thousands in vet bills to get them healthy and fit for adoption. Several died thanks to the horrific abuse they’d suffered at the hands of this “shelter” but she still went back and picked up another 15 to save the next week.

A few great authors were moved by her dedication to the floofs so have teamed up to create an anthology of animal themed RH books which can raise money for all the costs associated with CM’s rescue, which she has named Pacific North Pets.

In December PETTING THEM: AN ANTHOLOGY OF CLAW-VER TAILS is coming out!

If you pre-order this book post a picture here to be entered to win a special prize for this great charity.

The closer that we get to the release of the book, I (Amanda) am going to have a small auction of a few of the items that I make to raise money to go towards this great charity.

Here are two of the items (colors may vary) that will be available for auction.  You can check more out at my Facebook Page Overly Eclectic to see more.
